The Best Christmas Markets in Hungary

Hungary is really one city in December, and that city opens earlier than almost anywhere else in Europe.

I will be straight about this: Hungary means Budapest. There are smaller markets elsewhere and I would not plan a trip around them. What Budapest gives you instead is two of the highest-rated markets in Europe about ten minutes’ walk apart, opening on 13 November — a fortnight before Germany bothers — and running to 1 January. Forralt bor is 1,500 forint, roughly €3.80, and the food is a genuine reason to come rather than something you eat because you are standing up and it is cold.

The short answer

If you only go to one Christmas market in Hungary this year

Our pick, and the runner-up worth the detour.

My pick in Hungary

Budapest

Vörösmarty tér & St Stephen’s Basilica · 13 Nov – 1 Jan · index 85

The Basilica market is the one you have seen photographed — stalls arranged in a horseshoe around the square with a light show projected onto the church front every half hour. Vörösmarty is the older and, to me, the better one for actually eating. The two are a ten-minute walk apart, which sounds convenient and mostly is, except that everyone knows it, so between five and eight on a December Saturday you shuffle rather than walk. Go on a weekday, or go at eleven in the morning when the kürtőskalács is coming off the spit and nobody else is there.

Go instead if… you want it quieter and cheaper — Bratislava is two and a half hours up the Danube and a completely different feel. You want a proper second city — Vienna is the same train.

This is the shortlist

It's ranked on atmosphere, stall quality and how well the city works as a base.

Budapest

November 13, 2026 – January 1, 2027

Budapest runs seven markets from 13 November 2026 to 1 January 2027, and entry to all of them is free. A 3D light show fires onto Saint Stephen's Basilica every half hour from 17:30. Vörösmarty tér keeps a working blacksmith and a juried artisan core.

Questions people actually ask

When do the Budapest Christmas markets open in 2026?

13 November, and they run to 1 January 2027. That is one of the earliest openings in Europe and about a fortnight ahead of the German markets.

How much is mulled wine in Budapest?

Forralt bor is around 1,500 forint for 3 dl, about €3.80. It is one of the cheaper capitals in Europe for it.

Which Budapest market is better, Vörösmarty or the Basilica?

The Basilica has the light show projected onto the church and the better photographs. Vörösmarty has the better food and a bit more room to stand. They are ten minutes apart, so this is not really a decision.

    How busy does it get?

Between five and eight on a December weekend, genuinely uncomfortable — that is the main thing holding its score down. Late morning on a weekday is a different market.

    Is entry free?

Yes, both main markets are free to walk into. You pay for what you eat and drink.
