Number of markets

How many Christmas markets are there?

Most countries don't count their Christmas markets at all. Germany is the exception. It has about 3,250 organised Christmas markets, and more than 7,000 if you count every Christmas event that plays music, including small community ones.

Elsewhere the counts are rougher. Switzerland has more than 400, the Netherlands had about 250 in 2014, and the UK went from about 30 markets in 2007 to more than 100 in 2017. We couldn't find a national count for Austria, France or the US.

Visitors

How many people visit Christmas markets?

The biggest published number belongs to Brussels. Its Plaisirs d'Hiver winter festival recorded 4.36 million visits in 2025, counted from phone signals. Among single markets, Stuttgart (3.5 million), Munich (3.2 million), Strasbourg (3.05 million) and Vienna's Rathausplatz (2.8 million) lead. Germany's markets as a whole had about 170 million visits in 2024.

Counting methods vary a lot, so be careful comparing. Some cities count people, others count visits, and one person can make many visits. Wrocław's 812,000 visitors made 1.6 million visits in 2024/25. A lot of well-known markets don't publish a count at all.

Christmas market visitor numbers, latest published countOnly counts published by organisers, cities or their researchers, with the season they cover. Some count people, some count visits, and Brussels, Ghent, Bruges, Edinburgh and Graz count a whole winter festival or city centre, often from phone data. Salzburg counts entries. We couldn't find a published count for Cologne, Prague, Budapest or Kraków.

Spending

How much money do Christmas markets bring in?

Most of the money from a Christmas market trip is spent outside the market, in shops, cafés and hotels. In 2024 the average visitor to a German market spent €24.50 at the market and another €28.70 nearby. Germany's markets took about €4.17 billion that season, and Austria's were expected to take about €420 million in 2025.

City figures range from about €250 million for Brussels and £150 million for Edinburgh to $24.3 million for Carmel's market in Indiana. They measure different things, and some have no published method. Strasbourg's often-quoted €250 million has no study behind it.

Getting in is free at almost every market. The drinks aren't. In a 2025 comparison of 15 European cities, four glasses of mulled wine cost £27.41 in Copenhagen and £10.77 in Bratislava. At big markets in Germany, France and Belgium a cup now costs about €4 to €6, plus a mug deposit you get back.

Prices have gone up fast. A cup in Berlin cost €5 in 2024, more than 50% more than before the pandemic, and most stalls in Strasbourg charged €5 in 2025, up from €3 in 2022. A few markets charge to get in, like Berlin's Gendarmenmarkt, the Vancouver Christmas Market and Toronto's Distillery Winter Village at busy times.

Opening dates, our own data

When are Christmas markets open?

This section comes from our own database of 39 big Christmas market cities in eight countries. If you want to see markets in Christmas week, Germany isn't the place to go. Most big German markets close on 23 December or earlier, while many markets in Austria and Poland, plus Prague, Budapest and Paris, stay open into the New Year.

Christmas Day is the quietest day. Only 7 of the 39 cities have a market open on 25 December, and Berlin is the only one in Germany.

Which is the biggest Christmas market?

It depends on what you measure. By stalls, the biggest single markets are Leipzig and La Défense in Paris, with about 300 each. Manchester has the most of any UK city, 274 spread over ten sites in 2025, and Bryant Park and Union Square in New York have 180 or more vendors each. By visitors, Brussels's winter festival and Stuttgart's market lead.

  • Depends on the measure

There's no single biggest Christmas market in Europe. Brussels's winter festival has the highest published count, 4.36 million visits in 2025. Stuttgart has the most visitors at a single market, about 3.5 million, and Leipzig and La Défense in Paris have the most stalls, about 300 each.

Biggest Christmas markets by number of stallsOrganisers count stalls, chalets, traders and vendors in slightly different ways, so treat close numbers as a tie.

History

Which is the oldest Christmas market?

Dresden's Striezelmarkt, first recorded in 1434, is the oldest Christmas market with documents to back it up. Bautzen claims 1384, and in 2015 the German Record Institute gave each of them a title. Vienna is often dated to 1296, but the fairs granted that year didn't include a Christmas market. Nuremberg's date changed in October 2025, when historians re-read 1628 as 1678.

Most markets elsewhere are much younger. Stockholm's Stortorget market dates from 1837, but France's big city markets outside Alsace mostly started between 1989 and 1998. Lincoln's market began in 1982, New York's Union Square market in 1993 and Copenhagen's Tivoli market in 1994.

Food and drink

Christmas market food and drink in numbers

Few markets publish what they sell. Dresden's Striezelmarkt is the exception. It poured about 150,000 litres of Glühwein in 2025, or around 750,000 cups at 0.2 litres each, and its show bakery made 2,584 Christstollen. Elsewhere the best figures are cups and mugs, like the 170,000 mugs Manchester got through in 2023 and the 150,000 hot drinks sold at Quebec City's German market in 2025.

Tastes differ by country. In Vienna, 45% of residents named Punsch, a hot spiced fruit drink usually made with rum or wine, as their favourite market drink in 2025, against 36% for mulled wine.

Safety, crowds and weather

Are Christmas markets safe, busy and snowy?

Three deadly attacks since 2016, in Berlin, Strasbourg and Magdeburg, have changed how markets are run. Strasbourg had about 1,000 police officers, gendarmes and soldiers on duty every day in 2025. Smaller cities pay too. York spent an extra £34,000 on a sniffer dog and stewards in 2025, Wrocław put up 120 road barriers, and security costs for public events in Germany, markets included, have gone up about 44% in three years.

Crowds peak on the Saturdays before Christmas. On 13 December 2025 Brussels had nearly 200,000 visitors, and Arras, Reims and Cullman in Alabama all had their busiest days on record. Snow is getting rarer, at least in Germany, where the chance of snow on all three Christmas days has roughly halved since 1961 to 1990.

Myths

Which Christmas market facts are wrong?

Some figures keep getting repeated years after they stopped being true, and some were never true. Strasbourg's €250 million has no study behind it, and many big visitor numbers count visits, not people. Some markets also still show up in guidebooks long after they closed. These are the ones we see most often, with the better figure next to each.

Is Germany cancelling its Christmas markets?

No.

In October and November 2025, viral social media posts claimed Germany was cancelling hundreds of its Christmas markets, or even all of them, because of terror fears and security costs. Fact-checkers rated the claim false.

Reports found 12 markets that weren't coming back in 2025. Only two of them gave security costs as the reason, one in Overath in North Rhine-Westphalia and a one-day party in Sehnde in Lower Saxony. Others, like Hamburg-Rahlstedt, a historical market in Rostock and the market at Dortmund's Bodelschwingh Castle, stopped because of low takings, costs or renovation work.

Germany has about 3,250 Christmas markets, and organisers of more than 7,000 Christmas events registered music in 2024.

Posts in November 2025 saying Magdeburg had scrapped its Christmas market were wrong. The approval had only been held up by security concerns, and the city gave the go-ahead on 18 November.

Sustainability

How green are Christmas markets?

Reusable mugs and cups are now normal at big markets in Germany, Austria, France, Belgium and the UK. Dresden's Striezelmarkt washed about 760,000 mugs in 2025, and Brussels used 636,050 reusable cups in 2023. Not everywhere has switched. Gdańsk served hot drinks in more than 230,000 paper cups in 2024 and only started trialling deposit mugs in 2025.

Lighting is the other big change. Strasbourg's Christmas lights use a tenth of the electricity they did before the city started switching to LEDs in 2010, and Vienna's Rathausplatz market has used only LEDs since 2022. Food is the weak spot. Most German markets checked in 2023 still served food on disposable plates.

How we checked

Every figure on this page comes from an organiser, a city, a national statistics office, a published study or a news report. We opened each source and checked the number and the year it describes before it went on the page. The full list of sources is at the bottom of the page.

The opening dates, myths and index scores come from our own database of 39 major Christmas market cities, which we rebuild every season from organiser websites and official listings. Some 2026 dates are estimates based on the 2025 pattern until organisers confirm them. Index and elbow-room scores are our own ratings, and the Index methodology shows how each one is worked out.

When sources disagree, we show both and say why. Search figures are estimates of Google searches, so treat them as a guide to scale rather than exact counts. Prices are in local currency and don't include mug deposits unless we say so.
