Markets don’t pick their dates at random. A few simple habits explain nearly every date on this page, and they’ll explain next year’s too.
Britain starts first
5 of the 7 markets open in the first week of November are in Britain and Ireland: Birmingham (5 Nov), Bristol (6 Nov), Galway (6 Nov), Glasgow (6 Nov) and Manchester (6 Nov). Oslo (7 Nov) and Seville (7 Nov) are the others. That’s more than two weeks before most of Germany, and 14 of the 18 UK markets here open before 20 November.
Germany splits around Totensonntag
Totensonntag is the quiet Sunday of remembrance before Advent, 22 November this year. 41 of the 59 German markets wait until it has passed, which is why so many open on Monday 23 November. The 18 that open earlier mostly shut for that one Sunday, and 11 of them say so outright.
Advent sets the rhythm
The Friday before the first Advent Sunday is the big opening night. This year that’s 27 November, when 39 markets open, Nuremberg, Würzburg, Kraków and Brunico among them. The four Advent weekends are the busiest days everywhere.
The west stops at Christmas, the east and the Alps keep going
Most German and British markets end by 23 or 24 December. 38 markets run on to Three Kings Day on 6 January or later, in 11 countries, from South Tyrol and Poland to Croatia and Romania.

Next year Totensonntag falls on 21 November and the first Sunday of Advent on 28 November, so most of these dates will move one day earlier in 2027.
